Move over Harry and Percy, there’s a new kid in town. Or, more precisely, out of town. He’s eleven year old Meriwether Lewis Bowman, but he’d prefer it if you just call him Lew. He lives with his parents in the volcanic wilds of the Mt. Lassen area of northern California. With his Grandpa, who’s six feet five and looks like an NFL linebacker, Lew finds that the wilds are much wilder than he could ever have imagined. It’s a place where legendary beings like were bears and chupacabras do exist and they’re struggling for control of the natural world. Lew didn’t want any part of their ancient fight, but now he’s at the very center of it. His got only his wits, his best friends, the “Gift”, and the MOG POGs to help him battle some of the most powerful forces on earth. But then, it’s like his Grandpa says, “Life is full of surprises, and they aren’t all good. Sometimes you just have to make the best of things.”
This is the first novel by Don Cambou, who for a dozen years Executive Produced “Modern Marvels” for the History Channel. It's also the first novel of The MOG POG Saga. Cambou has turned his talent from nonfiction to this work of rich fantasy. Although it’s written for Middle Grade readers, few lovers of the genre will be able to resist the action packed, page turning, nail biting, ecological adventure he has created. The second novel, "The Treasure of the Carpathian Den" will be available in Spring of 2012.

The Crystal Point of the MOG POGS The MOG POG Saga Book 1 eBook Don Cambou

Aimed at middle graders, I think, it is a book indirectly about bring Eco-friendly life styles. There is some violence but no bad language. The story is quite limited in its scope (to me as an adult) but is very readable. My teenager read it and says it is very good at saying what is the right thing to do in moral situations.

The Crystal Point of the MOG POGS The MOG POG Saga Book 1 eBook Don Cambou Reviews

Excellent book, enjoyed it so much bought the second one which i can't wait to read.

Could not put it down.
The crystal point of the mog pogs is a great adventure book. You won't be able to but it down. If you don't have it, get it.
I absoutely LOVED this book. I was impressed with how quickly I was drawn into this story. The characters are real and the story is compelling. Couldn't put it down. Can't wait to see what is in store for us next from this author!
When you first pick up the book, it's immediately clear this author is a gifted storyteller. The characters are instantly engaging and the plot engrossing. It's part mystery, supernatural thriller and outdoor adventure melding modern mythology and real world wonder. My son and I both enjoyed it immensely! I'm hoping for a sequel.
Don Cambou's THE CRYSTAL POINT is the kind of tale that comes along too rarely -- it's clever, consistently amusing, and effortlessly combines supernatural elements with a truly compelling environmental yarn. This is the kind of book that will make kids excited about reading, and seems a natural choice for those smarter-than-the-average-bear middle-graders looking for the next big boys adventure story. In his debut novel, Cambou demonstrates a genuine affection for his characters, an uncanny portrayal of tween angst, and a satisfying ode to family ties. THE CRYSTAL POINT is an impressive effort that should not be missed.
There is a lot to like with Cambou’s series with eleven year old Lew Bowman. Lots of adventure and battles of fantasy creatures not unlike Harry Potter. But while some stories in this genre of YA fantasy and adventure, focus entirely on the fantasy, Don Cambou brings us back to nature and the wilderness.

A brilliant blend of the earthly and not so earthly on California’s Mt. Lassen
I loved this book. That's the easiest way to put it. Cambou creates a fantasy world set in the California Mt. Lassen that is both original and extremely entertaining. Chupacabras, zombies, were-animals, and sasquatches, if it's any kind of cryptozoological animal, Cambou is able to blend it seamlessly into the life of a 12 year old kid who, ultimately, just wants to be a kid. Equally impressive is that Cambou does not rely on the overused, and frankly boring, canon associated with his beasts, but rather invents his own mythos of production which I much prefer. Yet, these various animals don't completely control the book, as important to Lew's development are the mundane things. His first crush, being the smallest kid in gym class, and bullies, these problems, which every kid knows or will know, are expressed by Cambou in a realistic and relatable way. I highly suggest this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy or adventure novels because it is a blast. I can't wait for the next one!
